About ThamesMUN

An Academic Outreach Initiative by KCLUNA

What is ThamesMUN?

Thames Model United Nations is a one-of-a-kind MUN conference for students from Year 9 to 12 attending state-funded schools from selected boroughs in South London. It is organised by an independent Secretariat within the larger framework of the King’s College London United Nations Association and is completely free of charge for all attendees. Offering tailor-made training and round the clock support, ThamesMUN aims to build a platform for the future of this country to push on and fulfil their boundless potential.

Inaccessibility to secondary school MUN training and conferences is a problem encountered by several young aspiring diplomats and policymakers, and at ThamesMUN we hope to provide a platform that bridges this gap. As a Secretariat, we value inclusivity, accessibility and equal opportunity and we strive to provide an informative and eventful one-day conference. We provide customised training material to ensure that students are fully equipped, not just for the conference, but with long term transferable life skills.

Our Goals

ThamesMUN will offer personnel with years of Model United Nations experience to create a targeted training programme that will prepare students for the logistics of a conference. Through the conference, students will be able to develop crucial skills such as:

  • Public speaking

  • Debate etiquette

  • Negotiation skills

  • Knowledge of international affairs

  • Self-confidence

From this, students will be able to tackle university, careers and the rest of their lives armed with confidence and ability that this conference and our dedicated team are determined to unlock.

What is Model United Nations

Model UN is a popular activity for those interested in learning more about how the UN operates. Hundreds of thousands of students worldwide take part every year at all educational levels. Many of today’s leaders in law, government, business and the arts – including at the UN itself – participated in Model UN as students.

The United Nations Model UN Programme aims to build and maintain strong links between the UN and Model UN participants across the globe. It does that through guides and workshops, which teach students how to make their simulations more accurate; by visiting Model UN conferences and sharing firsthand knowledge of what the actual UN is like; and through encouraging Model UN clubs to take real action to support UN values and the  Sustainable Development Goals
